Zerorez began as an idea back in 1993 by Gaylord Karren and John Hopkins, who were making a living as property managers in Houston, Texas. They managed over 3,000 apartment units, and their biggest frustration, and largest expense, was keeping the carpets in their rental units clean for their residents. No matter which carpet cleaning company they hired, none of them were able to clean the carpets well enough to avoid having to replace them.

With their prior experience in engineering and in the oil and gas industry, they studied why carpet cleaning services weren't getting carpets cleaned properly.

They found that 30% of the soaps and detergents used to clean carpets were left behind in the carpets, proving it was near impossible to completely flush them of carpet fibers with current industry standard practices. These professional carpet cleaning companies left behind a sticky soapy residue which attracted more dirt and dust back into the carpet, speeding up how quickly carpets wore down and stains showed up.

With this knowledge, they made it their mission to figure out a way to find a cleaner, safer, more effective way to clean carpets.

After significant research activities, the founders developed a cleaning system that didn't rely on the use of toxic chemicals, soaps, and detergents, but instead utilizes Zr Water^®, which is a water-based cleaning agent. It's water that is purified, heated, alkalized, and ionized so it can attract oils, dirt, and debris trapped in carpet fibers (and on other surfaces) like a soap but without leaving any residue behind.

With this new technology in hand, Zerorez was founded in 2001 as a franchising business. Our proprietary technology allows small business owners to start their very own Zerorez carpet cleaning companies.

As part of our commitment to finding a better way to clean carpets, Zerorez has filed multiple patents, including for aspects of the Zr Wand^® and our process for making Zr Water^®.

Zerorez worked with carpet mills and the Carpet & Rug Institute (CRI) to become the first company to achieve a Platinum Rating for our cleaning system, CRI's highest Seal of Approval. Their independent lab testing confirmed our cleaning methods remove the highest level of soil, remove the most moisture from the carpet, and don't harm the carpet pile.

Every Zerorez location has an Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) Carpet Cleaning Technician (CCT) certified technician. This means we are certified in the art and science of carpet cleaning, including: identifying fiber, yarn, carpet construction, style type, finishes, soiling conditions, cleaning science and methodology, and equipment.

Zerorez technicians know the proper and best techniques and procedures for carpet pre-inspection, fabric identification, basic cleaning chemicals and equipment, and proper cleaning techniques for both residential and commercial clients.
